Article 1. Board of Health

A Health & Safety Officer for the City of Peabody is hereby created. The Mayor shall appoint the said Officer annually at the time officers of the city are appointed.

The Health and Safety Officer shall adopt suitable rules and procedures governing the transaction of his or her affairs and may adopt such other regulations as may be authorized and required for the performance of his or her duties, subject to approval of the Governing Body, in order to safeguard the health of the inhabitants of the city.

It shall be the duty of the Health and Safety Officer to make or cause to be made, inspections of all places and conditions within the jurisdiction of said Officer and deemed to be hazardous to the health of the inhabitants of the city and to serve such notices or orders as may be required or authorized by ordinances of the city and the laws of Kansas to correct or remedy such conditions or to remove or abate any health nuisance. The said Officer shall issue all permits in accordance with his or her regulations adopted for the purpose and authorized by ordinance. All actions of the Health and Safety Officer shall be reported in writing at the next regular meeting of the Governing Body of the city together with his or her recommendations. The Health and Safety Officer shall have the discretion and authority to, upon application, extend the time required for abatement or requests for hearing hereunder for a period of up to thirty (30) days.
